Helping Panama's stray animals
(laestrella.com.pa) A local NGO takes action against the overpopulation of cats and dogs and offers an affordable alternative to overpriced pet stores
Panama Star PANAMA. Have you driven or walked by a sick stray dog or seen cats in dumps in Panama and felt bad but believed you could not do anything? Think again.
Spay/Panama is a non-government organization in Panama started by a group of volunteers in 2001 to provide affordable spaying and neutering services to low income families, feeders and rescuers.
The group’s mission is to put a stop to the misery by controlling the overpopulation of cats and dogs through an intensive sterilization program.
Spay/Panama is neither a shelter nor a clinic. They only do sterilizations and promote the adoption of homeless animals. In 2008, they surpassed their goal of operating on 4,000 animals by attending to over 6,000.
If part of your new year’s resolution is adding a new member to your family, through Spay/Panama, you can adopt sterilized and dewormed cats and dogs easily, by calling 261-5542 or writing to doctor@spaypanama.org.

Save stray animals from the streets by inviting them home, and while you are at it, save money from your pocket! The Star’s columnist Phil Edmonston adopted his two cats from the NGO and couldn’t be happier with the results.
If you are not ready to take an animal in, but are still concerned about the less fortunate creatures, consider donating your time to care for them.
Spay/Panama can use help from veterinarians or any other animal-loving people to make a difference.
Additionally, monetary contributions or donations of gauze, syringes, near-to-expire or recently-expired medication, isoflurane, sutures, disposable surgical drapes, etc. are welcomed. For your convenience, Spay/Panama will arrange for a pick up, simply call 261.5542.
